Wow…I wonder if something like that has happened before. There was up to 8 billion of them last year and there population has dropped 87%, down to 1 billion.
I found that the lack of crabs could supposedly be a result of particularly warm water in the Bering Sea in 2018 and 2019, The crabs have been limited to pockets of frigid water, which would reduce access to food and increase competition. That in turn could have made the crabs stressed and more susceptible to disease and predation.
